That is evolving. For a number of years, Wet’n’Wild Sydney, the expansive water park at Eastern Creek with over 40 slides and attractions, has been working toward a more intelligent approach to crowd control. The park’s adoption of RFID-based virtual queuing using Accesso’s Qband technology—waterproof wristbands that allow visitors to digitally claim a spot in line, leave, and return when it’s their turn—was the most noticeable development. On the wristband display, visitors look at countdown timers. No waiting in line. In the heat, no irritation is growing.
In a way, it is a convenience feature, as it sounds. However, the fundamental impact is more structural. Redistributing bodies throughout the park is another effect of eliminating physical lines. There is less congestion. Bottlenecks that once formed close to popular slides vanish. On a busy day, visitors disperse more naturally, which alters the park’s overall pressure map. It’s difficult not to think of it as something more than an improvement in comfort.
Australia’s major venues are undergoing a broader shift that is pointing in the same direction. Since 2023, Sydney Olympic Park has been conducting an AI crowd control trial, which was first created as part of the NSW Government’s Smart Places Acceleration Program.
In order to create a real-time image of crowd density and mood, the system uses de-identified CCTV footage, weather feeds, and social media signals. This image shows not only where people are, but also how they are moving and whether there are any indications that something is about to go wrong. Operators now consider proactive intervention instead of reactive scrambling after it was tested against some of the biggest events the nation has recently witnessed.

Australia is already facing a severe drowning crisis; data from mid-2024 to mid-2025 showed 357 drowning deaths nationwide, the highest number in thirty years. Although the risk profile of water parks differs from that of beaches, the underlying reasoning is the same: a lot of people in or near the water, a range of skill levels, and staff who are only able to monitor a certain number of zones at once. There is genuine value in any tool that speeds up response times or identifies issues before they become serious.
These days, AI algorithms used in pool safety scenarios are being trained to recognize indicators of swimmer distress, such as erratic movement or extended submersion, and notify lifeguards via display systems or smartwatch alerts. Western Sydney University researchers have noted that the problem goes beyond whether the algorithm can identify the appropriate moment. It’s whether the alert is delivered to a human in a way that allows them to process it quickly without being overloaded with false alarms or diverting their focus from other important tasks. It turns out that the design problem is surprisingly challenging.
The potential of these tools is still genuinely uncertain. Crowd detection by AI is not flawless. There are false positives. Furthermore, technology is only effective when the people who interpret it are sufficiently rested and trained to react appropriately. However, the path appears to be fairly obvious. Walkie-talkies and headcounts are gradually giving way to data exercises, which are more akin to logistics than guesswork.
On a busy day, none of this is readily apparent when strolling through Wet’n’Wild Sydney. However, something is now operating beneath it all: processing, forecasting, and pushing the flow. The leisure industry is still in its infancy when it comes to this type of technology, and it’s still unclear if the systems will reach their natural ceiling or become more complex.
The fact that Australia’s summers aren’t getting any quieter is less uncertain. Additionally, parks like this one are discovering that instinct alone is no longer sufficient.
